Outdoor Storage Sheds
As our society gathers more and more material possessions we quickly run out of room to store these precious belongings. Instead of having a
garage sale, we find more ways to keep them to ourself. The most popular method is by getting an outdoor storage shed. Outdoor storage sheds are
easy to build and will store anything from the kids’ bikes and skateboards to gardening equipment and tools. Many sheds are doubling as workshops
and hobby rooms, quick and easy ways to get away from the kids and escape into your own little world.
I remember as a young child we would play in the little shed in our backyard, turning it into a fort and play area instead of using it just
for storing dad's gardening tools. It was an escape for young and old alike.
Of course there's also just the basic need of having to store your lawn and gardening tools and you'd rather keep them outside
since they will almost always be dirty. Larger buildings can hold equipment such as trimmers, lawn mowers and tillers. These sheds are
popular in rural areas that have larger yards and extra space available to house bigger buildings for their lawn equipment.
Many people are getting creative and buying sheds that look like miniature barns. Most are painted colors to match the exterior of the main
house, but some are painted to look like rustic barns.
You can find outdoor sheds at almost any home improvement store or lawn and garden supply stores. By far the biggest use is for storing garden
tools in garden sheds, but they are also great for storing unused home items and kids toys. You've seen these buildings and sheds featured on a
variety of home repair shows on DIY network and TLC. They're provided free to cluttered home owners who desperately need to get their homes in
order.
Outdoor sheds come in a variety of materials and shed types. From wood to vinyl, metal to plastic. You can buy them prebuilt or get a kit.
There are dozens of helpful planning books that will focus either on the construction or aesthetic design as it relates to your outdoor area.
The most common things to consider before purchasing are:
- cost
- resistance to the elements
- size
- easy of construction
- additional materials required (such as a concrete foundation)
- appearance
- ease of use/functionality
Expect to pay several hundred dollars for a fully finished shed and less for the kit and materials (you provide the labor of course). Don't
forget to consider what type of floor you need and whether it will have an overhead door (similar to a garage) or large double doors that open in
the middle. Consider your specific needs and what type of equipment you will be storing in your shed.
This website focuses most on garden sheds, we review three of the most common shed building materials, and our products page has a few sheds
to buy from Amazon. Good luck with your purchase and enjoy your new shed!
